How to Clean a Microwave

Safety First

Before cleaning your microwave, take a moment to reduce any safety risks and protect the appliance. If you’re doing a deep clean or need to move it, unplug the microwave to avoid the possibility of electric shock.

Avoid using bleach, oven cleaners, or other strong chemicals inside the microwave, as these can leave harmful fumes or residues that may contaminate food. Do not use abrasive scrubbers or steel wool, which can scratch interior surfaces and damage protective coatings. Instead, use soft cloths or sponges and rely on food-safe ingredients like white vinegar, baking soda, and lemon.

For stainless steel microwaves or appliances, use proper stainless steel cleaning methods to prevent streaks and damage.

Supplies You’ll Need

To clean your microwave naturally and effectively, gather the following items:

  • Microwave-safe glass or ceramic bowl

  • Distilled white vinegar or fresh lemon slices

  • Baking soda

  • Water

  • Soft sponge or microfiber cloth

  • Dish soap

  • Small brush or old toothbrush

  • Dry towel

  • Optional: A few drops of lemon or lavender essential oil for freshness

Step-by-Step Cleaning Method

Keeping your microwave clean doesn’t have to be difficult. Follow these simple steps for an easy, natural clean.

Step 1: Steam Clean with Vinegar or Lemon

Steam helps loosen dried-on food and grease, reducing the need for heavy scrubbing while eliminating odors naturally.

  • Fill a microwave-safe bowl with one cup of water.

  • Add two tablespoons of white vinegar and a lemon wedge for a fresh scent.

  • Place the bowl in the center of the microwave.

  • Heat on high for three to five minutes, until steam builds up on the window.

  • Keep the door closed for another five minutes so the steam can work.

Step 2: Wipe the Interior

Carefully remove the hot bowl. Using a damp sponge or microfiber cloth, wipe all interior surfaces, including the ceiling, walls, base, and inside of the door.

For stubborn residue, create a paste using two tablespoons of baking soda and a small amount of water. Gently scrub problem areas, then wipe clean with a damp cloth. This method removes grime and odors without scratching surfaces.

Step 3: Clean the Turntable

Remove the glass turntable and wash it with warm, soapy water. If dishwasher-safe, it can be placed in the dishwasher. Make sure it is fully dry before putting it back inside the microwave.

Step 4: Clean the Exterior

Use a cloth dampened with warm, soapy water to wipe the outside of the microwave. A small brush or vacuum crevice tool can help remove dust and crumbs from tight areas.

Focus on these areas:

  • Door handle

  • Control panel or buttons

  • Vents and top surface

Step 5: Deodorize

To keep your microwave smelling fresh, place a small bowl of baking soda or a lemon slice inside when not in use. You can also mix baking soda with a few drops of lavender essential oil for added freshness. Remove before using the microwave again.

Maintenance Tips to Keep Your Microwave Clean

Simple habits can prevent buildup and extend the life of your appliance:

  • Cover food when heating to prevent splatter.

  • Clean spills immediately while they’re fresh.

  • Wipe the interior weekly.

  • Perform a deep clean once a month.

  • Leave the door open briefly after use to allow moisture and odors to escape.

When to Call a Technician or Replace Your Microwave

Some issues indicate that cleaning alone isn’t enough. Stop using the microwave and seek professional help if you notice:

  • Uneven or inconsistent heating

  • Ongoing burning smells

  • Mold, rust, or scorch marks inside

  • A loose or faulty door latch

  • Sparks or unusual buzzing sounds

  • Cracks in the turntable or interior walls

Unplug the appliance and consult a qualified technician before continuing use.
